The 2021-2022 District Health and Safety Plan was revised and approved at the August 17, 2021 school board meeting, designed to protect students as cases of the delta variant surge.

For the start of the 2021-2022 school year, masks are now required for all students, teachers and staff. The modifications to the masking guidelines are in line with recommendations by the Center for Disease Control (CDC),local agencies and physicians.

Highlights of the plan include:

  1. Implementing a  full in-person instructional model, five days-per-week, with physical distancing to the greatest extent possible using numerous safety precautions outlined within the plan;
  2. Eliminates student temperature screenings upon arrival to school
  3. Provides full remote instruction, five days-per-week, in the Carlynton Cyber Academy using an asynchronous approach in the home.

Per the Health and Safety Plan, masks and face shields will be available to all staff and students in all K-12 buildings. Staff and students will be required to have a mask on their person at all times (other than while eating).

As of July 27, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published updated recommendations pertaining to wearing masks. The recommendations state that masks should be worn by all individuals regardless of vaccination status indoors in area of substantial or high transmission.

The guidance further recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to schools, regardless of vaccination status.

Therefore, all students and staff will be required to wear a mask indoors while the transmission rate in Allegheny County is designated as substantial or high by the CDC. When the transmission rate is designated as low or moderate in Allegheny County by the CDC, students and staff at the secondary level, who are not fully vaccinated are recommended to wear a mask inside the building and students at the elementary level will be required to wear to mask indoors.

Furthermore, due to a Federal ordered issued in January 2021, the CDC requires face coverings on school buses operated by school systems. The Carlynton School District will therefore require all students and staff to wear a mask in the school setting and while traveling on District transportation.

The Health and Safety Plan provides other guidelines related to cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting of facilities as well as ventilation in classrooms, common spaces and hallways.
