Students on the Cutting Edge

Last year, several Carlynton High School students were charged with a challenge to create sustainable energy by devising a vertical wind turbine as an energy source on the grounds of the Pittsburgh-based Energy Innovation Center. This past week, those students were honored and praised during a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil a new wind turbine at EIC. The wind stack mirrors the design developed by students.

Seniors Saman Majed and Sean Steding were among the teens interviewed by KDKA-TV news following the ribbon cutting ceremony. The students presented a three dimensional model of a non-directional wind turbine, the same model they created in class using drafting software and a 3-D printer.  Their model features colored floodlighting to indicate speed and power generated by the turbine.

Congratulations to our students for their vision and innovation. They stand with others on the cutting edge of design in alternative energy, and for that, the district is extremely proud.
