This is the image for the news article titled Students Place First at Environmental ChallengeCongratulations to two Carlynton School District teams for placing first in the 2017 Eco Challenge hosted by the Phipps Conservatory and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

First place medals were presented to the fifth grade team of Charlie Burcham, Mateo Carrasco, Eva Milliner and Lana Mihelcic and a sixth grade team of Mason Glover, Sean Hart, Ella Snyder and Bailey Vetter.

The Eco Challenge allows students to investigate environmental issues and challenges them to create effective solutions to make a difference in direct response to those issues.

The environmental competition was developed by the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Miami, Fl. The Phipps Conservatory was adopted as a satellite partner in 2008.

The challenge set before competitors included four major objectives for creation:
1. Sustainable and healthy meals: "Eco Edibles"
2. Visual Art: "Petals and Pollinators"
3. Environmental Design: "Eco Lots"
4. Creative Writing: "An Ode to Nature"

The first place teams will now advance to compete at subsequent sustainability contests and projects in connection with the Fairchild Challenge.

The mission of the Fairchild Challenge is to foster interest in the environment by encouraging students to appreciate the beauty and value of nature; develop critical-thinking skills; understand the need for conservation and biodiversity; tap community resources; become actively engaged citizens; and recognize that individuals do indeed make a difference.
