The Crafton Elementary Reading Support Room

Information provided by Reading Specialist Susan Mata-Kosko

Reading at Crafton Elementary is viewed as a developmental process that begins prior to entering school and progresses through a child’s elementary school career.

At all levels, word decoding (phonics), vocabulary, fluency and comprehension is viewed as the primary focus of instruction and is developed in conjunction with writing and an enjoyment of reading.

The goal of the Title I Reading Program is to show students how to apply reading skills strategically to acquire meaning from text. It also enables students to become independent
readers who simultaneously and effortlessly employ a range of strategies. This theory is supported by providing instruction that is coordinated with classroom practice based on the individual needs of the students. The Reading Support Room services students in kindergarten through third grade. Students qualify to participate through teacher recommendation and performance on Harcourt Trophies tests and DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Ready Skills).

This year's service for students in kindergarten through second grade is guided by the Reading Achievement Center. Our program increases student learning and reading achievement through the implementation of scientifically based reading research. Lessons are designed around phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, fluency and comprehension.

Students in third grade are receiving instruction through the Corrective Reading Program.  The Corrective Reading Program increases a child’s ability to read with fluency and understanding.

The reading program receives Title I funding under the Improving School’s Act of 1994.
